Are You Camera Shy?

Top 5 Video Production Fears:  #5: “Are You Camera Shy?”

Being in front of the camera can be intimidating, I’ll admit it. I’ve always been in the business of promoting people and being behind the camera making people look and sound good. So, it’s not my favorite thing to do either. Most of us feel a bit self-conscious and exposed in front of the camera.

But if you’re camera shy, these 3 tips will help you feel more at ease:

#1

Don’t feel the pressure to “act” in front of a camera.

Most corporate video work will focus on a company’s story, corporate culture, mission, service or product – and you’re part of it. If you ever find yourself as a subject of an interview for on a video, like an “About Us” profile, the interview will likely be based on a series of questions that you should already be aware and very familiar with.

#2

Speak from the heart.

You shouldn’t memorize answers to any questions. Know what you want to say but speak from the heart. I find that most clients have no problem talking about their companies or their careers because they are usually passionate about them. That’s how your audience will engage and make a connection with you and your brand.

#3

Be you. Sounds simple right?

But being genuine is really important. A technique I use with my clients is asking soft questions that make them relax in front of the camera before we get to the real interview questions. I ask “what did you have for breakfast?” or “what did you do over the weekend?” Once they realize they are having a simple conversation with another human being, it makes it easier for them to relax and actually enjoy the process.

And by the way, if you ever have to deliver specific content looking straight at the camera, you’ll probably be reading from a teleprompter.

So, if you’re camera shy, you’re not alone. But relax… there’s hope.
